Children are Special Too.

Children are the most precious gift we are given.  Children rarely complain of pain in their feet or legs.  And when they do, most people believe them to be “growing pains”.  However, the achiness or tiredness may be the result of severe tendonitis due to joints being out of position or malaligned.  Kids with flat feet tend to become sedentary and cannot walk or play sports for long periods of time, due to overworking muscles and excessive pressure on hips, knees, ankles and foot joints.  Kids with high arches  tend to experience more ankle, knee, hip and lower back pain because they cannot tolerate the shock which occurs when they walk or run.  As well, some “turning in” of the feet is normal when kids walk but in some cases it is abnormal.  Proper evaluation of a child, can prevent future disabilities in life.

Children can also complain of heel pain which can be due to an inflamed, irritated growth center at the back of the heel.  This is commonly seen in children from 8-12 years of age and is called “Sever’s Disease”.  It is also very common in children who play a number of sports.  The difference in how the heel functions during each sport such as running vs. hockey vs. soccer will irritate the growth center.  Heel cups are a temporary solution to control the heel.  Custom moulded orthotics, along with a stretching regimen will alleviate these symptoms and return a child to their level of activity quickly.

Children are also prone to warts and ingrown nails.  Warts are caused by 18 different viruses and can be treated  PAINLESSLY with high acid treatments.  Ingrown toenails will continue to create problems for kids unless the offending nail border is removed.  Soaking and antibiotics will reduce symptoms temporarily but until the piece of nail, which extends far below the skin, is removed, the symptoms will recur.  The “root” of the nail (matrix cells) are chemically treated so that the offending portion of nail never regrows.  This is all performed under local anesthesia and is painless.
