Ingrown toenails are painful and can get infected causing a lot of complications. This is especially true in the diabetic patient with poor sensation and decreased circulation.
Fortunately, ingrown toenail surgery is a simple, painless procedure that can provide a lifetime of relief. Toenails become ingrown for a number of reasons – genetics, trauma, poor fitting shoes, improper trimming, the result of structural foot deformities, or fungal toenail infections.
Your doctor will try to wedge the nail down the side to provide relief. In some cases you may need the toe anesthetized and have a permanent wedge removed. This can be done in the office with little discomfort and no stitches. If one is Diabetic or has poor vascular status, it is very important to see your doctor as soon as possible.
Begin soaking in warm salt water, if your nail is sore, and appling antibiotic ointment. If it persists, please contact us as we can fix this with minimal discomfort to you. In fact, it’s one of my favourite procedures as it provides so much instant relief.
