The feet bear the entire weight of the body, and this can ultimately lead to foot problems for those who are overweight. Having extra weight can lead to foot related issues that include tendon inflammation, plantar fasciitis, or arthritis. Obesity can also lead to gout, diabetes (which can lead to more foot complications), or peripheral artery disease. Obese patients who are struggling with foot related issues should consult with a podiatrist for treatment. A podiatrist will be able to help diagnose the issue and provide a treatment method. A podiatrist will also be able to help find exercises that can aid weight loss and are easy on the feet and ankles.
Obesity has become very problematic at this point in time and can have extremely negative effects on the feet. Obesity and Your Feet
Since your feet are what support your entire weight when standing, any additional weight can result in pain and swelling. Being overweight is one of the main contributors to foot complications.
Problems & Complications
Extra Weight – Even putting on just a few extra pounds could create serious complications for your feet. As your weight increases, your balance and body will shift, creating new stresses on your feet. This uneven weight distribution can cause pain, even while doing the simplest tasks, such as walking.
Diabetes – People who are overweight are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes, which has a drastic impact on the health of your feet. As you get older, your diabetes might worsen, which could lead to loss of feeling in your feet, sores, and bruises. You could also become more prone to various infections.
Plantar fasciitis – Pressure and stress that is placed on muscles, joints, and tendons can trigger plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of tissue that forms along the bottom of the foot.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is often the cause of a painful condition known as plantar warts. These warts can develop on the bottom of the feet and grow inward due to the amount of pressure that the feet endure while walking and standing. Plantar warts are small, grainy growths that may have tiny black dots in the center. These are blood vessels that have broken and sometimes cause pain and discomfort. Plantar warts can develop from frequenting areas like public swimming pools and locker rooms, where fungi thrive. These warts are contagious, so it is suggested that you refrain from sharing shoes, socks, and towels with others. If you have pain on the bottom of your foot or notice hardened areas that may be plantar warts, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can help find the right course of treatment for you.
Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Achilles Foot Clinic. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.
About Plantar Warts
Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.
While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.
Symptoms
Treatment
To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.

There are several reasons why elderly people can be more prone to various foot conditions. As we age some individuals may feel general body weakness or fatigue, difficulty in balancing, and lack of physical activity which may even cause one’s natural gait to become altered. Common foot ailments that older people may suffer from can consist of bunions, corns, calluses, athlete’s foot, and heel pain from loss of the fat pad over time. Additionally, poor circulation can occur, and this can cause the feet to swell or tingle. Other conditions like diabetes can wreak havoc on the feet as wounds that are left unnoticed can lead to amputation in severe cases. It is extremely important to maintain proper foot care among the elderly as problems in the feet can be indicative of larger health issues. Trimming the toenails straight across can be essential in preventing ingrown toenails and wearing shoes that fit properly may help to avoid hammertoe and bunions. Elderly feet should be inspected every day as well as washed and dried thoroughly, especially in between the toes. If you need help with your feet or take care of an elder’s feet, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can recommend effective remedies and techniques.
Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Achilles Foot Clinic. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
The Elderly and Their Feet
As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Susceptible Infections
Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the tendon that runs along the bottom of the foot, is the most common cause of heel pain. This condition can develop following long hours of standing, walking, running, or participating in sports. In rarer cases, an acute injury to the bottom of the foot can damage the plantar fascia and bring forth early stages of this condition. Having flat or overpronated feet, high arches, wearing ill-fitting and uncomfortable shoes, having tight calf muscles, or being overweight or obese can also cause plantar fasciitis. If you are suffering from heel pain, it is strongly suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist near you.
Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Achilles Foot Clinic. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Causes of Heel Pain
Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.
Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.
Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.
Why Might Heel Pain Occur?
Treatments
Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
